On Thursday, November 13th, 2014 at 10:59 pm, Alia Jene Hall was born and I became an Aunt. She has big beautiful eyes, and a full life ahead of her. This is all I hope for her, the little girl who has stolen my heart.
A letter to my niece, for your future:
I hope you watch The Little Mermaid over and over again until you truly believe you are Ariel.
I hope you explore every option you have handed to you.
I hope you giggle when I tickle you and sigh when I hold you. Even when you’re old.
I hope your mom lets me call you Peanut.
I hope your friends someday find out that I call you Peanut and start calling you that as well. Everyone deserves a good nickname.
I hope that you dream. I hope that no one ever tells you that you can’t do it all. If you want to be a dinosaur, I don’t know how, but you can be a dinosaur. When the world tells you no, call me, I’ll tell you yes.
I hope that you read. I hope that books become a magical world for you. I hope that you never stop reading. Start with something small, like the ABC’s and end with everything BIG.
I hope that you cry. Because crying is about more than just tears. Sometimes, in the middle of a torrential downpour taking place on your face, you will come to a realization. This happens more often than you think. You will realize that the boy wasn’t worth it. You will realize that maybe your mom was right. You will realize that your life will go on and you will get better no matter how much you cry. So cry, allow it to happen. It may suck in the moment, but it will feel better tomorrow.
I hope that you laugh. I hope your laugh is funny one too, that can be compared to animals: like a walrus or a squirrel. When you laugh, keep laughing. Just like crying, sometimes you will realize things when you laugh. You will realize that your Aunt is actually really funny sometimes. You will realize that you are in the midst of true friends. You will realize that you have a sick sense of humor and you will be strangely okay with it. Laughing makes you feel great, and laughing makes your life wonderful.
I hope you get hugged. I hope you get big bear hugs that wrap you up and hold you tight. I hope that when you learn how wonderful those hugs feel, you share them with the world. There is nothing wrong with being a “hugger,” embrace it.
Most of all, I hope you know that I love you. Your mom loves you. Your dad loves you. Your grandparents love you. An entire community loves you. You are loved and you will never stop being loved. Hold onto that. Forever.
